Discrimination of Smokers (where is my alcohol free lane)
I was under the impression that when the TV took off the ads for tobacco off that it also took the alcohol companies ads off. But now I see hard liquor and now Beer commercials on the television.
Why is not RJR suing under the discrimination law on this. I think that if the alcohol companies can advertise then the tobacco companies should be allowed.
Just heard on the BBC that the WHO (World Health Org) is trying to make harsher rules in other countries on tobacco.
This all just makes me MAD... I think that alcohol cause much more damage to people than smoking.
You don't see a smoker on Skid Row with loss of Job, Home and Family but alcohol will and does cause all of the above. Alcoholism is just like smoking as it is a slow killing machine with many days and or years in hospital after many years of use.
Why are not people going as hard and heavy after the alcohol companies as they are going after the tobacco companies? I think this is unjust and very discriminatory....
3 cases in point (personal experiences)
1. Standing in grocery check out line. Man in front of me with case of beer and 2 bottles of hard liquor. Checker says nothing to him at all.
I get to checker and she says to me. "you know that those cigarettes are bad for you and you should quit". I reply, "Why are you so concerned about me smoking when you just let a customer with a large alcohol purchase check through and you said nothing to him about the dangers of drinking or that he should quit? I should sue you for discrimination." If you are not going to tell everyone about the harm of DRINKING then you should not be telling anyone about the harm of smoking.
2. Checking in at boarding area of Plane. Boarding lady says "Oh you are a smoker (smelled it on my clothes) you should quit" I say "when you smell alcohol on someone do you say the same thing about drinking?" she says "no" I say then why would you say anything to me about smoking. I should you sue your for discrimination. Again why would people give caution to smokers and not to drinkers. This is just unacceptable.
3. Last case in point. Boss always telling me I should quit smoking. Asked boss why he always harasses me about smoking, He says that he is concerned for my health. Ask boss if he is concerned about other employees health. He says yes. I say "then why do you let 2 employees sit at the bar from opening to closing every day drinking till they are drunk and say nothing to them about drinking and quitting?" "until you start harassing them about drinking don't come harass me about smoking." Boss never again said anything about my smoking and also never did anything about the alcoholics in his employee...
What is wrong with these three examples....??
They say that smoking is more dangerous than drinking. But I have yet to see (just a smoker) kill people with a vehicle when he has had too much to smoke... I have never seen a smoker not go to work and get fired from his job from smoking...
Loose his house and family because of smoking.
What RJR needs is ads that compare smoking to drinking. And wake up the country to get on the Band Wagon to stop drinking. Since neither one are illegal It either needs to be a fair across the board against both or shut up and leave the both alone.
They make smoke free zones. Where is my drunk free driving lane???? I take my life in my hands every time I get behind the wheel. There is no drive safe place for me. I run the risk of getting hit by a drunk driver every time I get on the road.
Drinkers are obnoxious,
Drinkers are always in fights
Drinkers are dangerous behind the wheel of a car
Drinkers are Wife and child abusers
You can't say this across the board about smokers.
About the below stats. I am a bit worried about the 2nd leading cause of death here: Poor diet and Inactivity. Does that mean that soon the companies will demand that we eat right and exercise or be fired from our jobs because we are a high medical risk for their company? already some states suport the right of the employer to fire anyone who smokes even on their own time. There are only 22 states at the moment who suport the Persons individual rights.
THIS SHOULD SCARE THE BEGEBIES OUT OF YOU!!!!!
WE ARE SLOWLY LOOSING ALL THE RIGHTS OUR FOREFATHERS
FOUGHT FOR AND MADE FOR US.
IT ALL STARTED WITH THE SEATBELT LAW.
YOU HAVE TO DO THIS *****
TO HAVE THE PRIVILAGE OF DOING THIS******
FILL IN THE BLANK..
THIS COUNTRY IS NO LONGER A DEMOCRACY
THE 10%ERS RULE
The leading causes of death in 2000 (the latest figures available) show alcohol consumption the third highest cause of death in the country.
The Journal of the American Medical Association, Jan. 19, 2005, Vol. 293, No. 3, p. 298, reported on the leading causes of death in the United States:
- Tobacco (435,000 deaths; 18.1% of total US deaths)
- Poor diet and physical inactivity (400,000 deaths; 16.6%)
- Alcohol consumption (85,000 deaths; 3.5%)
(Note: 16,653 deaths from alcohol-related vehicle crashes are included in both Alcohol consumption above and Motor vehicle crashes below.)
Good reading about smoking and alcohol related illnesses. Seems that most of them have the two in common for risk factors.
